The Parish of Langar cum Barnstone

Our parish consists of  two villages, Langar and Barnstone approximately half a mile apart. Situated in the rural countryside of the Vale of Belvoir, we are in the very south of the county of Nottinghamshire, with the Leicestershire border just under four miles further south.

We are a small parish - around 1,000 parishioners in total, with no shops, one pub, one primary school, (which has brand new buildings as of December, 2008), and two churches, one in each village. We are within easy reach of services, being three and a half miles to the south of the east-west A52 Nottingham-Grantham road and about the same distance to the east of the north-south A46 Lincoln-Newark-Leicester road. We are just 3 miles south of Bingham, a small market town with good services.  Newark, Grantham and Nottingham are also easily accessible, all three being roughly 30 minutes away by car. These  latter three all have excellent rail links to London and the north.

The parish council has nine members and is very active, meeting on the third Thursday of every month except August in the village hall in Barnstone. We strive to support all our village organisations as much as possible. These include the primary school, the church, the Scouts and Brownies, the Womens’ Institute, the British Legion, the Pre-School Playgroup and  of course the village hall.  We also have very good links with local businesses which are mostly situated on the airfield which hosted RAF 207 Squadron during World War Two from 1940 to 1943. (They were replaced by the USAF 9th Service Wing for the rest of the war, with the Canadian Air Force in residence from 1952 to 1963). Nowadays the airfield serves the local parachuting club.
